A Taste of African Heritage
Course & Community Program by Oldways (pilot launched 2012)
A six-week cooking and nutrition course that teaches participants to “remix” African diaspora recipes, making veggies, beans, fruits, herbs, and whole grains the stars of soul food, to reclaim the power of heritage foods as medicine. This evidence-backed program (developed with a nutrition nonprofit and cultural food scholars) is gentle and empowering. It shows that familiar favourites like greens, sweet potatoes, okra, and spices can be prepared in healing ways, and it’s taught in communal settings (such as churches and community centers) to boost social connection while learning. For someone craving wellness without cultural erasure, it provides “food for the soul”, literally and figuratively, affirming that ancestral wisdom and modern health can coexist on the plate. (Oldways offers free recipes and an online version of the class, making it accessible.) You can check the course here.
